Routines are Important for Children

Routines are Important!

Parents, I know you have heard this repeatedly, ringing in your ear like an annoying 4am alarm. Truth of the matter is that children function best with routines.

As an experienced elementary teacher, educational coach and business owner, I can assure you that parents complain daily about the performance of their children and display frustration about the lack of results from even the ‘best’ educational facilities available.

Establishing routines at home with your toddlers, can promote organized and well educated students in the future. No worries parents. It’s never too late to stop, drop and begin to create routines at any point in your life. Some of these daily routines may include:

1. Read a book

Reading is important

Parents, it’s about time to drop the ball about the excuses for not having sufficient time or that “I am so tired”. Your lack of parenting today can and will affect your child later. Allow your child to read a book to you everyday and you can also read to them. Reading a book in the car on their way to school is a great way to incorporate reading into their daily routine.

2. Establish Rules:Discipline

Routine maintains discipline

Establishing rules about television in the bedroom, limiting tablet and phone times are important. Also, implement rules to direct children from when they enter the house after school until bedtime. These should include where and when homework is completed or review of material learnt as well as dinner time and bedtime. It is important to remain strict with the rules and never waiver thus strengthening your routine.

3. Communication

Establish routine communication with teachers. Ensure to bridge a strong communication between your child’s educator and or co parents. Children tend to create different realities for themselves depending on who or where they may be. Allow children to recognize your strong communication connections.

4. Boundaries

Play area establishes routine

It is important to establish boundaries. As parents, it is rather important not to allow children to become involved in the company of adult conversations. They tend to believe they and adults are friends. Avoid these instances. Children should not be allowed to call parents by their first names. What is practiced at home May very well be manifested in public.

5. Play Area

Boundaries and Routines

You can create playrooms or stations for your kids. They should always be aware of their area. Establish an area where their homework can be completed as well as reading centers. Discipline begins at home.

Practicing these basic routine steps can help children become better at home which I turn will create better learners in the classroom!
